Anxiety. Just the word makes your heart beat at least a little faster, right? But what if I told you there’s a good anxiety and a not-so-good? Yeah, there’s a distinction, and it’s not that you bite your nails even more often. Welcome to part 1 where we look at what anxiety really is—to the point, no jargon, promise!
First Things First: What is Anxiety?
Think of anxiety as your brain’s alarm system. You know when your phone is making that ding, ding, ding noise letting you know there is a deadline looming? That is the anxiety at work. Anxiety is there to keep you on your toes, ready to go, and focused. Here’s what regular oldanxiety looks like:
The Scenario: Your boss emails, “Can we talk?” Cue dramatic music.
Reaction. Sweaty palms, palpitating heartbeat, yet you appear like avery professional conversationalist.
The Aftermath: You get hold of the conversation, and anxiety just drops off.
It is an entirely normal type of anxiety-your brain says, “Hey, wake up and pay attention!”
Why We Need Anxiety (Yes, Really)
Evolution didn’t screw with this one. First, a nervousness that saved one’s ancestors’ neck from being dinner for some of thosesabertoothed tigers helped you:
Here’s how to tell you’re in the safe zone:
Short-Lived: You worry about the date beforehand, but after it’s done, you’re back to watching Netflix and snacking.
Specific Triggers: There’s always something behind it – a deadline, a party, or gasp, meeting your partner’s parents.
Manageable: A little small talk with a friend or perhaps a cup of chamomile tea usually does the trick.
Therefore, if anxiety is doing its job and not overstaying as a guest who refuses to leave the party, then so be it.
When Anxiety Stays Too Long
But here’s the kicker: anxiety is not your roommate. If it’s squatting in your brain rent-free, interfering with your work, relationships, or your ability to enjoy literally anything, it might be time to check if something bigger is going on.
